She turned a commonly faced problem into a brilliant business opportunity
Daalchini | Prerna Kalra
Winner, TIMES She UnLTD. Entrepreneur Awards 2019 – Food Category
Prerna Kalra, who won a silver medal in the post-graduate diploma course at IMT in 2009, has over eight years of corporate experience. She started her career as product manager in a financial inclusion pioneer. Prerna later joined a financial technology start-up and was among the first five employees of the company. She also went on to become the former Head of Products.
As a working professional and a doting mother to a three-year-old girl, Prerna noticed how difficult it was to pack and carry home-cooked meals daily, not just for herself but for her family as well. During one of her work visits to China, she came across vending machines that dispensed almost every kind of fresh food item – from fruits to momos and more. Inspired by this, Prerna along with Vidya B, her colleague from the financial startup, ventured on their entrepreunal journey and Daalchini was born.
Daalchini provides instant, affordable, and healthy home-cooked food to professionals through its IoT-enabled phygital (physical and digital) vending machines. This Delhi-NCR based startup not only relieves women from the stress of day-to-day cooking but ensures them healthy home-cooked meals. Not only that, Daalchini also provides an opportunity to home cooks running tiffin services from their home to share the responsibility of cooking for women in other professions. All partners are women entrepreneurs; all working towards one goal of providing home-cooked food to customers.
Prerna says, “We aim to become a catalyst in improving the overall health of the society by providing home-style food. But at the core, it is an initiative ‘by women, for women’.”
