Sahar Mansoor | Bare Necessities
Winner, TIMES She UnLTD. Entrepreneur Awards 2019 – Beauty Category
Sahar Mansoor grew up with an overwhelmed feeling toward India’s trash problem. She was
confronted by it every day, seeing it on the streets. She volunteered time with local waste
pickers and watched them sort through waste. She worked with a ragpicker community and
had a first-hand experience of the amount of waste which was directly impacting the
Sahar took a World Religions and Ecology class in college, where she watched a video on
Bea Johnson and how she was living a zero-waste life. Greatly inspired and moved by this,
this class was a turning point in her journey as an environmentalist. She knew that she had
to make some major lifestyle changes in order to match her values.
She studied environmental policy at the University of Cambridge and had worked at the
World Health Organization but decided that she needed to live a life fully congruent to her
environmental and social justice values.
She soon realized that it was near impossible to find personal care and home care products
that didn’t contain harmful chemicals and weren’t packaged in plastic. In response to this
problem, she wanted to create something that mirrored the values of zero waste, ethical
consumption and sustainability. She wanted to make it easy for other people looking to
consume more mindfully and to encourage others to produce less waste. Thus, Bare
Necessities was born.
Bare Necessities is a company run by Sahar, that produces everyday essential products
which are packaged in recyclable, reusable and biodegradable packaging. Relying on ethical
sourcing from local farmers and vendors and by emphasizing the employment of women,
Bare Necessities provides solutions that benefits consumers and society.
By producing zero-waste products goods, hosting educational workshops and conducting
sustainability consulting services, Sahar seeks to change the narrative on waste in India and
demonstrate that any individual can positively impact their community, through inspiring
others to reduce waste and think consciously.
